New York (Tadias) - The following piece was first published on the print issue of Tadias Magazine in the context of the July 2002 brawl that erupted on the roof of Christianity’s most holy place between Ethiopian and Egyptian monks.

“Eleven monks were treated in hospital after a fight broke out for control of the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the traditional site of Jesus’s crucifixion, burial and resurrection”, wrote Alan Philps, a Jerusalem based reporter for the Daily Telegraph.
“The fracas involved monks from the Ethiopian Orthodox church and the Coptic church of Egypt, who have been vying for control of the rooftop for centuries.”

DS Editor:
Thank you for bringing this news out once again.

It is time that we stand together with the brave fathers and people of Deir Sultan gedam in Jerusalem. This area used to belong to Ethiopians since the time of King Solomon and now it has been eroded (by the so called "fellow Christians"-the Copts) to the small piece of property (the roof) that we know today. It is very, very sad when you hear the whole story from the fathers who actually live there (Bitsu Abune Mathias and the others) who are so brave fighting the Egyptians and the Israelis. These brave fathers are not getting any help from EOTC "betekihnet" or Patriarch office. It is really a sad situation.
A group of Ethiopian film makers (in Canada and Israel) have made a film about this and are showing it to people all over. If you (anyone of you) can organize a screening in your area, contact them thru their email. We, EOTC members all over the world, have to extend a helping hand. The fathers and EOTC people there are currently paying more then $300,- an hour to an attorney to fight the Copts and others in Israeli courts, an "up hill battle" I say, if we are not doing what we can to help with the costs; for there are not many
"mi'emenan" in the area. They need our help!!!
Here is an excerpt from the site:
Christians believe the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, is to be built where Jesus Christ was crucified, buried and resurrected.
Deir Sultan Monastery lies above the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The Monastery has been home to Ethiopian monks for centuries. Deir Sultan has been a site of an extended and at times violent turf war between Ethiopian and Egyptian Coptic churches. Hence, this centuries old Monastery is near collapse. And it’s future rests upon us - all Ethiopians.
Let's save our history! Lets save our treasure.
Please save our Monastery!!!!!!!!!!!!

And one last thing, who's this "yophtahe" who is telling us to keep quite. Are you for real ? Go away, man! Are you an Egyptian ?

I wish you all --- Melkam Zemene Marqos,
Cher were yaseman,
