ነበር ምላሻቸው::

Orthodox Tewahedo Church Doubted Census Result

An Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Official expressed doubt on the census result. Megabe Sereat Daniel Weldegeriam, head of the Parish Council Department, replied to Semea Tsidk Christian Newspaper that number of Christians is reduced in comparision to the data the Church has.

According to the head, the census might have overlooked the monastics and students of the traditional Church education. The head further highlighted the census the Church is going to hold in a year's time.

The much awaited census result of the 2007 census was made public after a year. Its result is result especially and strongly opposed by Ethiopian Muslims. Only the evangelicals, who tripled in time od not more than a decade and half, look happy about the result.

Christmas 2008 Message from Partriarchs and Church Leaders in Jerusalem

Date Tue, 23 Dec 2008 14:38:50 -0800
Christmas Message 2008

Statement from the Patriarchs and Heads of the Local Christian Churches in Jerusalem

Dear Sisters & Brothers
Greetings.

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas there seems to be even more, darkness, conflict and despair in the world around us. That means for us, as Christians, we must think even more carefully and deeply about Jesus ? the baby born in Bethlehem's stable.

Many people are afraid of the dark whether it be the absence of light around them or fear of the unknown in their personal lives or the world at large.

Despite all this we need to think and mediate about Jesus ?"a light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness could not
overpower." St. John ch. 1 v. 5

St. John's Gospel goes on to remind us of the facts of Jesus' birth ?"That he was born into a world which did not recognize him and a people that did not receive him." St. John Ch.1 vv 10 & 11

So, as we approach another Christmas we must show the world around us that Jesus is a light in the dark which never goes out, a burning light which takes the terror from the night and moreover, a light on which we should fix our eyes not least when the clouds appear to be gathering around us..

Just as the baby in the stable is the focal point of our Christmas celebrations, so we must affirm and witness to the fact that Jesus is the light which shines out from our personal and corporate lives at all times.

Again and again we need to ask ourselves "What would Jesus do, what would Jesus say". Then, our thoughts and ideas of His actions and words must be translated into the daily life of our community ? particularly in this Holy Land.

Similarly, we have to convince the world's political leaders that the true peace will only come on earth when we seek God's will for his people ? not least through the words and actions of Jesus. Nor must we belittle the fact, affirmed in St. John's Gospel, that to all who accept Jesus, He gives power to become the Children of God.

This means we must stand alongside all who suffer around us ? the hungry, the homeless, the unemployed and the bereaved since Jesus tells us that when we help others we are doing it to Him as thought He were suffering for them.

To stand alongside also involves us in action. We need the light of Christ to shine on this Land to enable us to work more realistically for a two state solution which would end the burden of restrictions arising out of Occupation.

(So we pray for the President ? Elect of the USA that he and other world leaders may see the urgent need for peace in the Middle East and not least in this Land).

We need also to see the situation in which many are suffering in Gaza in the light of Christ and make a determined effort to bring them urgent relief.

Moreover, we must never forget our duty to point our children and young people to the light of Christ assuring them that, through Jesus we all have hope for a better world.

Then we would greet our Sisters and Brothers across the world ? not least the thousands who have visited this Holy Land recently. It is important to recall that you are walking in the footsteps of Jesus and when you pause to see the plight of many of your fellow Christians that you respond as you believe He would.

We are conscious of all who suffer across the world but for all we believe the only way forward is to see people and situations in "The light of Christ".

Be assured of our good wishes and prayers for all of you as Christmas approaches and may God's blessing be on your homes and families.

Walk in the light and the light will illumine your path,
Walk in the truth and the truth will set you free,
Walk in the way of peace and you will have, through Christ,
the peace which passes understanding.
(Prayers of the Way: by John Johansen-berg).

Is the Orthodox Church losing ground?

Dear Deje Selamaweyan,
Greetings to you all at the eve of the Western Christmas. We need some more days to celebrate our Orthodox Christmas. We beseach all our readers to enjoy both Christmases, thanking God for giving us these gifts. Unfortunately we have still an issue at hand talking about the Ethiopian census, which angered especially the Muslim community. Numbers and statistics are instigating basic question about Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Church and the fate of that country in respect to religion. We request you all to the following article posted by Arefe on Addis Journal. Are we really losing ground?

Is the Orthodox Church losing ground?
By arefe
(Addis Journal):- One thing which may be a cause for concern in the new census is its indication of decrease in the number of Orthodox Christians, traditionally the dominant church in Ethiopia. The orthodox now comprise 43.5 percent of the population, as against just over 50 percent in 1994.The erosion is mainly due to the rising influence of Pentecostal churches and the recent Muslim revival in the country, it was said.
What does this mean? Why is the Orthodox Church finding it hard to cope with its competitors, the evangelicals and the radical Islam?

What implications does it have for the future? What should be done to reverse the trend?

The rise of secularism and the erosion of faith, and a new mood of independence are often cited for why the Orthodox Church is losing its privileges status.

But historian Professor Medhane Tadesse in his 2003 essay, “Religion, Peace and the Future of Ethiopia” mentions other reasons. The Orthodox Church (EOC) is “weak economically and organizationally,” he says.

“Lack of vision and leadership is part of the problem. Orthodox Christians do their teaching more in their capacity as committed individual believers than as commissioned agents of an international church organization,” writes Prof. Medhane.

There is a marked contrast in the modus operandi between the EOC on the one hand and the charismatic movement and radical Islam on the other, according to the analyst.

“The latter have shown a capacity for mobilization, discipline, patience, flexibility and social engagement that has consistently outshone the EOC. In fact, the EOC has become an easy prey and a soft target for all other religious institutions as each of them seems to be in competition to secure as many members of the EOC as possible for their churches”, argues the scholar.

The EOC opposes what it calls the unnecessary project of evangelizing the Evangelized. This remained key in the conflict between missions and the EOC for many years. According to Prof.Tadesse Tamrat, the clear basis for the permission given by the Ethiopian Christian rulers to the missionaries to operate in their domains was always the understanding that they try to convert only non-Christian subjects of the periphery. Now both revivalism and freedom of movement and other structural, financial and organizational advances have enabled other churches to focus on the center and target followers of the EOC.

Prof. Medanhe notes the fact that the EOC is losing its dominant position could be bad for the country.

”One major basis for the long history of religious tolerance in Ethiopia , I believe, was the feeling on the part of EOC that its dominant position was not in any way challenged; hence it was willing to tolerate the other religions. Now that equilibrium is threatened. Indeed, Ethiopia is undergoing a fundamental revolution, perhaps the deepest in its history, in the area of religion. The religious fabric is in perpetual turmoil. Engulfed by other religions, both radical and moderate, the EOC seems to be worried about losing members to missionary churches and the Wahabis. The long-held belief that the missionaries came to Ethiopia to destroy the Ethiopian Orthodox church has a large following. Arguably, if it has to survive it must prevail. Sooner or later this will lead to violent confrontation and conflict. The chronic problem of denying burial grounds to the Pentecoste and the violent confrontation during religious holidays between the EOC and the Pentecoste in recent years should be taken a s early warnings of an imminent problem.” says the Prof. Medhane.

But Prof. Medhane points that the big threat also come from foreign involvement which he said is “at its highest level.”

“The Saudi-based Muslim World League has remained at the forefront of spreading Wahabism in Ethiopia since the 1980’s.more disturbing, Ethiopia has occupied center stage in the struggle between radical and moderate Islam at a global level. One of the principal points of difference between moderates and extremists is the position they take on Ethiopia, i.e. Christian Najashi versus Islam Al-Nejashi. The former considers Ethiopia as a country which saved Islam and it should be accepted and tolerated while the latter believes that Ethiopia has remained a major obstacle to the southward (Sub-Saharan African) expansion of Islam and it should be punished. This camp seeks not to ensure the rights of Muslims but rather total Islamic victory over the country. Saudi Arabia’s more fundamental wing is at the forefront of this militancy against Ethiopia,” he points out.Radical Islamic groups are flourishing in Ethiopia in various forms and organizations, different from each other and depending rather on thier association with external funding than ideology.Hence, poverty at home and financial and organizational support from abroad is dramatically influencing the nature of political Islam in Ethiopia.

Despite the setbacks, the scholar argues that Orthodox is still important to the Ethiopians.

“Whether it is against aging and frustrating or it is more utopian than practical, the EOC still commands a sizable and very influential section of the Ethiopian society.”

But, as the religious equilibrium is collapsing very quickly, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church should be encouraged to face the challenges. How?

The first advice is to look out for religious militancy that come from foreign radical Islam and evangelical church.Explaining his reason, Prof. Medhane says that indigenous Islam and the early actvities of the Ethiopian Evanglical church were not directed against the Ethiopian state.Indeed although excluded from national life, indigenous Muslims had infact proven themselves to be unwilling to collaborate with external aggresive forces and they were no less loyal or patriotic than Christians. There has been an ongoing process of religious revivial in Ethiopia over the centuries, but the contemporary religious militancy should be seen as a wholly new phenomenon and a threat to the peace, stability and independence of the country. It is externally energized and directed, and focus should be made on the Ethiopianization of its leadership, resources and religous content. We should be consistently reminded that the new trend does not automatically equates to Islam or Western Christianity in its broader, cultural sense, and Ethiopia must always make efforts to distinguish between the two.

According to Prof. Medhane, something should be done to effect a mechanism of shared resources among the different religious institutions, above all capacity building and internal reform In the EOC, so that it cope with the new challenges.

Prof. Medhane warns that Saudi Arabia is becoming the main influential factor in Ethiopia’s Islamic affairs.” This new trend, coupled with Saudi economic activities in Ethiopia, triggers mixed signals. Ethiopia needs to learn how to seek accommodation with the Saudi connection, carefully mange its dangers, and possibly turn its advantage as a momentum that enriches its economy, pluralism and international dynamism.

The scholar is of the opinion that that religious freedom should be regulated (e.g. through a code of conduct), but religious conflict should be handled wit great care by the government.” A critical feature here is properly interfacing uncontrolled religious freedom with controlled democracy in the country. The media and school should play a pivotal role in disseminating a culture of tolerance and serving as forum for interreligious dialogue. Civic education is very important in this regard. The most serous challenges to religion tolerance and diversity usually come from exclusivist truth claims. Religious institutions should take such issues into account when preparing religious books and materials.

But of great consideration, according to the scholar, is poverty.” At the heart of militancy, the fast change in religious equilibrium and the growing influence of religion lies in the wide spreading of poverty, the economic weakness the state and the bankruptcy of ideologies.” he states.

“Whether to dream of better world, or try to live less poorly in this one, many people in Ethiopia (as elsewhere when the state fails) have switched their allegiances from politics to religion. Surely, the Ethiopian state couldn’t prevail if its economic policies continue to be poorly financed, directed or implemented. With events unfolding, it will have little chance to prove its usefulness to the masses. Instead, substantial majorities of Ethiopians will continue to pin down hopes on religion, but are likely to become more ready to experiment and accept different versions of it” concludes Prof .Medhane.

Orthodox will remain the biggest because the evangelicals are slowing down the last 2 years. the census shows evangelical grown in 1990s.

anyway, EOC ..

- needs to change all geez bibles to amharic SO THAT OUR PEOPLE CAN FINALLY READ!!
- also translate it to Qubee afaan oromo instead of oromos using western bibles.
- the EOC priests are corrupt and sometimes they don’t EVEN READ ANY BIBLE but collect money!!
- advertise antiquity as an advantage, don’t try to radically modernize the ancient EOC just to compete with evangelicals!!
- every EOC member needs to be ambassador, this means stop vilifying the evangelicals (evangelicals grow more and more when we vilify them but their growth is slowing down recently because there is less vilification. stop vilifying them!!)
- evangelize more. especially in sidama,SNNPR and gambella states, we need to evangelize

One thing that the scholar,Ato Medhane, forget is that the EPRDF regime has done a lot to defame the church in the south and Oromia region. They usually associate the church with the previous rullers in their propaganda and as aresult many people in the south and oromia region even those who were strong member of the church are forsed to go out only due to political reason. We all remember what Ato Tefera Walwa had said in a political rally during the 1997E.C election.

Hey, for me I see it the difference between Ortothodx and Penetecoastal is minor in comaparison the new threat coming from the imported muslim radicalsim. The Orthodx and the Pentes are making unnecessary noises about thier differences in the way they view St. Mary but the biggest threat for the country comes from the non-chirtian elements who are to ready to use whatever to convert people.

It would be foolish to expect a lot from the Diaspora in restoring the once almighty Orthodox Church. The Ethiopian Diaspora is dispersed in different parts of the world. At best what they could is to build new churches in their host country.
They are too scattered and uninformed to help the church at home.
Whatever must be done must be done by people at home. First, the orthodox priests should come out of the Byzantines like fight and dispute to move to the city and get better resources, leaving their mass followers in the country side. Every priest can’t have an office at bete kihent. There is whole work to be done in the countryside.

There was a decree published during the Emperror’s time in Negarit Gazeta partitioning the nation into closed and open zones. The closed zones were areas closed to missionary activities. The open areas were the part of the country that EOC was non existent or minority. The EOC thinks Ethiopia belongs to them and expect a favorable treatment from the government. This is a wrong way of curbing membership erosion. They should go out and strengthen their message and work hard at getting back members they lost. They are not mission oriented. The way EOC grows is simply by reproduction of its members. This is a sure way to a minority status. The evangelicals I think are running out of steam. The dedication, commitment and integrity they showed during the Emperor’s, Derg and early years of EPRDF is giving way to mass conversion and their commitment to the cause is not what it used to be and their message is being watered down from the simple message of the Gospel to all sorts of imported feel good quick fixes. Who is left the? The Muslims. One thing to be clear is whether Christians like it or not Muslims have just as much right as anybody else to propogate their faith. Religion just like any idea should compete in the market place of ideas. One thing I have concern about Islam is its refusal to separate church and state. To Islam the state is an instrument of the Mosque. You will not find any credible Muslim who believes in a secular state. This is of great concern should Muslims become a majority. Without a firm separation of church and state there will not be democracy as we know it. That will indeed be scary.

“Why is the Orthodox finding it hard to resist the strong appeals of evangelical churches and RADICAL islam”

What is your basis for labeling the “growth” of Islam as Radical?

The commentary by Kermo Tija is spot on and the other commentators also make some valid points. The best and surest way for the EOC to regain members is to modernize itself and rid itself of factionalism and by freeing itself from government interference. Having said that, I do question the integrity of the person (Medhane Tadesse) whose quotes seem to form the basis for this article. I believe he works hands and gloves with the Woyane regime, a regime that has contributed to the continued politicization of the EOC, and should not be seen as an objective analyst. Medhane works for a Woyane think-tank and was the main propagandist for the Ethiopian invasion of December 2006, although he seems to have backtracked a bit since then.

One thing that needs to be pointed out with regard to Protestants is that it is incorrect to label all Protestant Christians as Pentecostal (or with the pejorative term Pente). Evangelical would be a better term, but there are some Protestant Christians who are not evangelical. Most of the Protestants in Ethiopia are not even Pentecostal (charismatic). The two largest Protestant churches in Ethiopia (Kale-Hiwot and Mekane Yesus), which together probably constitute two thirds of the Protestants, are not Pentecostal.

Hi curious,
Thanks for the comment and pointing out the misconstruction in the sentence.
The reference to the radical Muslim is of course, not the indigenous, but the foreign financed, imported version of Muslim. I stand corrected.
And Fikru, point well taken!
thanks a lot.

It is true that the EOC is loosing its memebers beacuse of many reasons. one of them could be the outdated and boring old way of preaching styles. Most memebers of the church are proud of just being the first and the last. That is not true at all. I don’t beleive that the church even keeps the old arc of covenenat because it never been revealed and public. I can’t be persuaded that Ethiopian churches are out of the political drammas that the country has been facing. In fact, they are the main reasons of the deep involvement in government affaris. The so called Zemene mesafint is the old version of ” Mekefafel”. Today, amhara or tigrie people will not accept any preist from none of their tribes. That is when they decide to go by their own.

If one considers the history of christianity both in the west and in ethiopia, it has been changing with time and prevalent situations. chriatianity started as a single religion and it was not divided into orthodox, catholic or protestant until the third century. due to some major heresies and internal differences it first divided into orthodox(in the east) and catholic(in the west), later in the 16th century the protestant movement grow out of the catholic christianity. and all these divisions and different manifestations of the christian religion we see now are the result of the historical developments. but in all this they share the same scriptures, traditions and creeds. now they may vary in terms of their styles, language and the way they do spirituality, but that doesn´t make them more truthful or more right. they all belong to the same root. there are too many common things between these religions than their differences. in fact they are not enemies to each other. the most challenging thing in all these great religions of christianity is not their difference but the underlying ideology of exclusivity and narrow-mindedness of the leaders who are causing all the conflicts and wars among their followers. the authors of this article is not serving the truth of the religions but is feeding more to the problems caused by those leaders. his analysis of the religious atmosphere of our country is more driven by fear than tolerance. as the saying goes like ‘ when the elephants fight it is the grass that suffers’, the masses of ethiopia are dearly paying the price for all the mess caused by the so called leaders of these religions. those leaders are willing to kill in the name of the truth.it doesn’t matter whether the orthodox, or chatolic or protestant or even islam claim to have the truth, if this truth doesn’t have respect for the very life of human beings, it is not worth of following. let’s stop seeing each other as enemies- we have other enemies we should fight together. secularism, atheism, consumerism and radicalism are all the real enemies of our faiths. look how they are eroding the basic beliefs we hold and are destroying the good and worthy virtues in our life, especially in our country. i think most of the people in our country are innocent believers who don’t hold any evil or harm against their fellow neighbours regardless of their religious backgrounds. we should spend our energy and resource on combating those enemies than fighting each other and competing for followers.

Late night American television broadcasts commercials and infomercials asking for money to bring the Gospel to the pagan Ethiopians. Orthodox Christians are portrayed as primitive pagans who once worshiped Christ but now have slipped back into primitive African pagan customs with only minimal connection to Christianity. Orthodoxy must proudly proclaim itself.

Peace to you all,

It is really sad to see all this. Oh guys, come on. Religion is not a race. It doesn’t matter how many followers it has as long as it meets the objective…and the objective for being religious is to be in peace in this life and most importantly in the Life after death. The moment we embrace a religion for objectives beyond that, we are definitely mislead. We are actually out of the way because we may be actually doing politics in the name of religion. Unfortunately, the majority claim to be following this and that with out reflecting why actually they are doing so…and then we end up in the mess we are witnessing everyday.

The fact is …if something is wrong and the whole world follows it, it’s still wrong!!!

If the Orthodox Christianity was open for modernization just as its Catholic counterpart, it has a chance to slow down and even stop the onslaught of evangelical erosion. It is not willing to change; it has to meet its fate. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church must learn from the Roman Catholics and field highly educated priests to the debunking the myths perpetuated by “evangelicals” as it is successfully done in the USA by the Catholic Church.

We Ethiopian Young Orthodox Followers are doing to our assignments to solve the financial and organizational problems of our Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Don’t worry we are strongly working for that even if Woyane is trying to paralize our movement!. We never give up! God is with us and we go up to death to defend our church!. We are following each act over our church from whom? by whom? why? with the support of what?. Any ways, now we try to do things patiently, if not, if pressures over our church are continuing as it has been, We shall also use FORCE THAT MIGHT NOT BE SEEN IN THE HISTORY OF ETHIOPIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH. But, we have very little patience now! Generally, We are not slept, yet we are doing our assignments; we don’t want to speak loudly any ways, God Knows what we are doing for our church!

Constitutional ban on homosexuality

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — Religious leaders in Ethiopia on Monday urged lawmakers to amend the country's constitution to ban homosexuality in a move they argue could further strengthen existing codes.

At a meeting in the Ethiopian capital, nearly a dozen religious figures, including heads of Ethiopia's Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, adopted a resolution against homosexuality, which they termed as "the pinnacle of immorality."

They also blamed homosexuality for the rise in sexual attacks on children and young men.

"This is something very strange in Ethiopia, the land of the Bible that condemns this very strongly," said Abune Paolos, the patriarch of Ethiopia's Orthodox Church.

"For people to act in this manner they have to be dumb, stupid like animals," he told reporters. "We strongly condemn this behaviour. They (homosexuals) have to be disciplined and their acts discriminated, they have to be given a lesson."

Homosexuals can be jailed for a minimum of six months in Ethiopia, where hostility towards gays is high and sexual practices are very conservative.

But while homosexuality is illegal under the country's penal code, it is not mentioned in the constitution.

"We urge parliamentarians to... endorse a ban on homosexual activity in the constitution," the resolution read.

It also urged the government to establish more rehabilitation centres and to place strict controls on the distribution of pornographic materials.

The head of local NGO United for Life Ethiopia said homosexuality was not a human rights issue.

"Here we don't believe that it is and we don't believe that it is related to creation -- it has no biological base," head Sium Antonios said.

"It is unacceptable, it is immoral. Every religious leader said in one voice that it is the pinnacle of immorality," he added.

Muslim Radio Criticised Ethiopian Christians

A radio program broadcasted from USA openly criticised the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Protestants "for conspiring to cook" the 2007 Census. The program "First Hijra Special Broadcast: Ethiopian Census 2007" criticised ethiocross website editor and Mahibere Kidusan for taking the issue in their radio programs. Muslim guests from Europe and USA openly demanded "taking the political power" to "redeem Muslims from Christian hegemony".

The guests warned "religious war" and "warn Christians to open their eyes". The host summerised "a rise of Christian fundamentalism" in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia's "Born Again" ex-PM Tamerat scorns politics

Jimma Times

The recently released former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Tamerat Layne, stated his disdain for politics as he spoke in front of a packed Ethiopian evangelical church, according to a Jimma Times correspondent in Addis Ababa.

Former PM Tamerat was released this week after he spent 12 years in prison for charges of corruption and abuse of power. The release of Tamerat has captured the attention of many Ethiopians, especially in the capital city Addis Ababa.

According to another JT correspondent, the former prime minister allegedly attended the Mulu Wongel mega church in the capital city surrounded by numerous pastors who gave him time to speak for several minutes in front of over 10 thousand members. He gave accounts of his long “humbling” prison time and stated that he became “born again” Christian after a woman inside the prison preached to him. A soft spoken Tamerat allegedly showed no resentment and described his interest to be involved in the evangelical churches.

The Ethiopian evangelical population has grown significantly during the last 25 years and the recent national census indicated that over 18 percent of Ethiopia’s 76.9 million population is Protestant Christian. This growth has reduced the traditional dominant Orthodox Church from over 50 percent to 43.5 percent of the country.

Some Ethiopians in the capital believe that Tamerat Layne’s release was timely for the government to divert the attention of the population who have been protesting and angered by the 6-year prison sentencing of famous musician Teddy Afro. They believe the sentencing of pop star Teddy Afro (real name Tewodros Kasahun) was politically motivated due to the musician's anti-government songs. Various opposition officials also believe the incarceration of ex-PM Tamerat was not due to corruption as stated, but as a result of power struggle inside the ruling party.

Christian Teenagers Preaching Islam with their Clothing

What do you think of this picture? It is an Islamic clothing which has become famous especially after the late Palestinia President Yassir Arafat? That would be an ordinary man's judgment though. What strikes me these days is that these Arabic and Islamic clothings are started to be signs of teenagers especially here in the USA.

If you live in big metropolitans in the US, you might have definetly seen young Habesha Lijoch "decorating" themselves with this Araft-scarf. I have more questions than answers. I know it is part of the cultural war Islam waged against the west, but how could these clothings "infiltrate" the teenager circle? Do you have any idea? To your surprise, young children who regularly attend Church services cover themselves with this scarf and preach Islam. What a hell is going on?The scarf is, from the nature of the material point of view, is good quality. The vendor I asked what the name would be, replied "I have no idea". To my additional surprise, it costs only $10. Do you have any idea?

Muslim Saudi and its Inhuman Treatment of People

The title "Muslim Saudi and its Inhuman Treatment of People" is not what the Washington Post originaly used. You know, political correctness, and stuff? We call a spade "a spade". We know the ugly face of Islamofascism, a.k.a. Wahabism, terrorism, Somaliaized Saudism (Al-Shabab); Wahabised Ethiopians etc. Well the following article will give you the fate of the beutiful Ethiopian girls, Christians Muslims alike, in the Arab land. Caption of the above picture reads "Images from the "mercy campaign" show an Indian driver with a bit in his mouth and an Ethiopian maid kneeling inside a doghouse." The article is a very polished one, unless read between the lines, may be posted for PR purposes. The country that exports global terrorism, powerhouse of fundamental Islam, and ticking time bomb, is known for its bad human rights records.

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia -- In each ad, the servants are depicted as animals.

In one, a woman in the back seat of a car tugs on a harness attached to a bit in her Indian driver's mouth. In another, an Ethiopian maid kneels inside a doghouse in front of a bowl full of bones as her employer holds a leash around her neck.
The public service campaign recently launched in Saudi Arabia highlights the abuse of foreign domestic workers and urges their employers to treat them more humanely.

The man behind the television announcements and newspaper inserts says that it is time for Saudis to stop ignoring the issue and that their faith should compel them to act.

"We sometimes deal with our servants as if they were not human and have no feelings," said advertising executive Kaswara al-Khatib, who came up with the idea for the campaign after noticing how badly some Saudis treat domestic workers and foreign laborers in general. "There is rampant abuse in the kingdom. Enough denial."

Khatib said the slogan, "Have mercy so that you shall be shown mercy," is meant to remind Saudis that "good manners are an integral part of being a good Muslim."

"What I'm trying to point out is that there's an inherent contradiction in being a devout Muslim, praying five times a day and mistreating your servants," he said.

Khatib has been hailed as a hero as well as accused of anti-Saudi bias and of tarnishing the country's image.

A Facebook group supporting the campaign has attracted nearly 3,000 members, and several newspapers and television channels have asked to use it since the ads first appeared on the popular Saudi-owned MBC satellite channels and in al-Hayat newspaper last month.

But writer Trad al-Asmari slammed the "mercy campaign" as inaccurate. Problems of mistreatment exist in many countries, Asmari wrote in al-Jazeera newspaper, but the campaign singles out "all Saudis as ugly and merciless."

In an editorial in al-Watan newspaper, Hassan al-Assiri wrote that "the campaign poses a very important question."

"Is it true that Saudis actually have no mercy? Have studies and polls . . . proven that the only way to treat the problem is by performing surgery on our consciences?" he asked.

Saudi Arabia has about 8 million foreign laborers, mainly from the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent. About a quarter of them are domestic servants. Many households in this country of 28 million have several servants, including drivers for women, who are not allowed behind the wheel in the kingdom.

With advances in press freedoms since King Abdullah took the throne in 2005, newspapers have routinely published articles about domestic servants who have been beaten, raped and sometimes killed. Last year, Saudi police rescued an abused Sri Lankan maid after she contacted a newspaper. She had been confined and had not been paid for seven years. Newspapers reported in May that an Indonesian maid who had been tortured was found in an empty lot in Mecca, gagged, bound and blindfolded. Her employer was later arrested.

A Human Rights Watch report in July harshly criticized the mistreatment of domestic workers, who are not protected under labor laws. The report said the workers often endure "non-payment of salaries, forced confinement, food deprivation, excessive workload, and instances of severe psychological, physical, and sexual abuse." The organization said embassies and other foreign missions receive thousands of complaints from domestic workers each year.

A Filipino diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said an average of one runaway maid a day walks in to his consulate. Most complain that they haven't been paid, he said, but others report confinement and a lack of food. Some have endured physical abuse and even rape, he said.

One maid from the Philippines escaped to the consulate a year and a half ago after she was raped by a relative of her employer, she said. Accompanied by a Filipino diplomat, she reported the rape, and her employer's nephew was sentenced to eight months in jail and 200 lashes after he confessed, she said. Now she is waiting for the courts to grant her $13,000 in compensation for lost income and emotional distress.

"I will never leave the Philippines to work overseas again," said the woman, who serves as a liaison between case workers and other domestic workers at the shelter.

Jowhara Ahmad, 30, an Indonesian maid featured in one of the ads, came to Saudi Arabia on a visa to perform the hajj pilgrimage when she was 17. Like tens of thousands of other migrant workers, she remained in Saudi Arabia illegally to look for work. She has spent 13 years in Saudi Arabia sending home almost all of her monthly salary of $300 to put her son and younger brothers through school, support her parents and build a home for herself there.

For the past six years, she has been working for a family with which she's content, she said. But over the years, several employers did not pay her, and she ran away from one household when she feared she would be raped by her employer's teenage son.

Khatib said that despite the criticism, the response has been mostly positive. "Our society is becoming more mature and inward-looking," he said. "I would not have been able to launch this campaign six years ago."

New census result splits Ethiopian bloggers view

Dear Dejeselamayewan/
As you well know, the 2007 census is still heading the news list. Ethiopians in diaspora are reacting passionately to the debate, one of which is our own blog DejeSelam, which is refered by the following website as "Blogger Deje Selam who is trying to fill the absence of ETOC believer's voice on the web ". The rest is history. Please read this article to have a general view of what is going on the cyberwar, so to say.

New census result splits Ethiopian bloggers view
Ethiocross// December 17, 2008// By Mesfin T.

"Driven by the huge growth seen in the Protestant faith, followers of the Christian faith account for 62.8%, followed by Muslims at 33.9%. Protestants took off from 10.2% to 18.6%, the census found. Among Christians, Orthodox still holds the majority with 43.5% followed by Protestants and 0.7% of Catholics."Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA)
"I see in the House quite a few women wearing a headscarf; like myself this was not the case in pervious times. So when we are now exercising our rights more freely, it could seem that there is a high population presence. The growth is still there but probably not as perceived," confident Central Statical Agency Chief Samiya Zekaria told the MPs." Capital Newspaper
Ethiocross:- In the wake of a new Ethiopia census 2007 made public bloggers in Diaspora camp have written passionately about the number of Christians (Orthodox, protestant and Catholic) and Muslims in the country.

According to the released census report the number of Christians (Orthodox, protestant and Catholic) has increased by 1.2 % from 32.7 million in 1995 to 46.4 million this year. The rising number of Protestants in the country was said to have contributed to the high number of Christians in the country, which group has increased by 8.4% from 5.4 million in 1995 to over 14 million now.

Blogger Arefe of Addis Journal who seems much concerned about the declining number of Ethiopian Orthodox church (ETOC) followers wrote "One thing which may be a cause for concern in the new census is its indication of decrease in the number of Orthodox Christians, traditionally the dominant church in Ethiopia." Then, continued to ask a very critical question such as "Is the Orthodox Church losing ground? What does this mean? Why is the Orthodox Church finding it hard to cope with its competitors, the evangelicals and the radical Islam? What implications does it have for the future? What should be done to reverse the trend?" To point out a way forward to ETOC current challenges Blogger Arefe pulled a historian Professor Medhane Tadesse essay that was written back in 2003.

Blogger Deje Selam who is trying to fill the absence of ETOC believer's voice on the web has been a very critic of vocal Ethiopian Muslims in recent years. To Deje Selam a vocal Muslims Diaspora who have led a long propaganda and claim that Muslims outnumber Christians in Ethiopia if not much equally are proven wrong. He declare his victory by writing "Ethiopian Census Made Public, Christians are Majority".

In contrast, a reaction from Ethiopian Muslim bloggers was a mixture of anger, frustration and rejection. One of the leading vocal Muslim blogger Negashi - OJ called a new census report that puts Ethiopian Muslims number at 33.9 % way less than 62 % Christians "Ethiopia: "Millennium's Biggest Lie!".

Blogger Negashi- OJ frustration was expressed by his call for rejection of the new census result that puts Ethiopian Christians at 62 %. The blogger uses a very same old argument some vocal Diaspora Muslims pushing forward in recent years. His concludes his argument by saying "Ethiopian Muslims has long rejected the traditionally biased figure and demanded for a fair and unbiased counting process, transparency and full involvement in the verification process of the latest census. One of the demands lodged by a delegation of Ethiopian Muslim Diaspora was this very issue. None of these demands were addressed and Ethiopian Muslims have no choice but to reject this latest result as one in a series of conspiracies designed to deny their democratic and religious rights."

Ethiopia for Equity and Justice (EEJ) an Ethiopian Muslim Blogger who constantly express anti -Christian (Evangelicals) rhetoric wrote a three part analysis that question the credibility of new census under the title "Ethiopia, Credibility Questions Raised against the Census Report". EEJ argue the number has been manipulated by the government in support of Christians. Blogger Deje selam who is associated with ETOC replay to blogger EEJ by asking the very same question" Is Muslims number manipulated?" and gave his defense argument.

The story that appear in "Capital" which is one of the leading Ethiopian English news paper about the debate in Ethiopia parliament before the census report gets approved reveal some light between the perception of Muslims and the fact on the ground. The news paper reported that "While Mohammed Ali of UDJ cites "reports" that estimated the Muslim community to represent more than 45% of the nation, the MPs affiliated with the EPRDF cited piecemeal evidence such as the number of Muslims and Christians who attend various religious gatherings in Meskal Square.

"For Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia (CSA) Chief Samiya Zekaria ( Who is a Muslim) whose census put Christians at an overwhelming 62% majority, it is all about the numbers not the perceptions.

"I see in the House quite a few women wearing a headscarf; like myself this was not the case in pervious times. So when we are now exercising our rights more freely, it could seem that there is a high population presence. The growth is still there but probably not as perceived," confident Samiya told the MPs.

Finally while writing this blog I read the very expected last reaction from vocal Muslims camp which says "Ethiopian: Census Data Report Was Rejected by Muslims after Conference".

At list for now all the bloggers who seems have a clash of view on the current census report agree on one thing, which is the surge of Evangelicals in the country. AFP who broke the news wrote "The Christian population rose to more than 46 million, or 62 percent of the population, up from 32.7 million in 1994.....Membership of Protestant churches as a whole has increased from 5.4 million to 13.7 million."

Acts 5:14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.

Two books on Muslim Fundamentalism Inaugurated

By Orthodoxawit Ethiopiyawit

Inauguration of two books on Muslim Fundamentalism

(Addis Ababa): Ethiopian writers and scholars of different time and era have wrote about the extremist Islamic movement, its consequences and what the true belief of the doctrine itself is –
1. Anqetse Amin (አንቀጸ አሚን) by the 16th century Yemeni born Muslim convert who later became Echege of Debre Libanos Aba Enbaqom, 2. Lemene aleselemkum(ለምን አልሰለምኩም)by the late Alemayehu Moges and
3.yehaimanot mechahchal be Ethiopia alene (የሃይማኖት መቻቻል በኢትዮጵያ አለን?) by His Grace Abune Samuel.
And now…
4. "Muslim Fundamemtalism in Ethiopia (አክራሪ እስልምና በኢትዮጵያ)" by Ephrem Eshete and
5. "Islam Encounters Christ (ከአክራሪ እስልምና ወደ ክርስትና)" by Dn Daniel Kibret.

Ephrem's book presents the historical crossing of Islam and its followers in Ethiopia from the past till the present time. It explicates the aspiration of fundamental extremism and its evolving strategies, to conquer, along centuries. The book is well structured and very intellectual which makes it well standardized research book. In short words it marks a new observation in the history of our time. And in my on belief it is a matter that should be incorporated in all the teachings of the Church, Sunday school curriculum or even theological studies. It is a must own and must read book of our time.

It was inaugurated on November 15 of 2008 at Debre Selam Kedist Mariam Church in
DC,USA. It was viewed by more that 60 audiences. Nibure Ed Gebrehiwot Melise,
Memher Berhanu Gobena, Kesis Dr. Amare Kassaye and Dr Aklilu Habte were among the
honorable guests. During the program it was suggested that the book should get
translated to Oromeffa, the necessary preparation is being performed to achieve this
with in the next year. The book is available in Mahibere Kidusan stores and other private book stores. You can also drop a comment and read what others say about the book at Blog: http://radicalislaminethiopia.blogspot.com/

The other new book to the list "Islam Encounters Christ (ከአክራሪ እስልምና ወደ ክርስትና)" by Dn Daniel Kibret. This auto biography of the remarkable life of a Nahid Mohammad, a Christian convert from Muslim, depicts about the scandal and suffering that she faces after her call from our Lord Jesus Christ. In her earlier life Nahid was a cruel and vicious person to any Christian around her. After our Saviour revealed to her just like he did to Seoul. She was reborn in Jesus Christ, there after she was chased and hunted by government executives but God has been with and protected her just like He did for the prophet Jeremiah. It is great story of a brave Christian woman in whose life we see the ever ending love and protection of God. It is an inspiration and living proof to all Christians that the God they believe is merciful; he is the resurrection and the life. It was inaugurated on December 13 of 2008 at Jerusalem Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. There were more than 80 people for the occasion. Among which his Grace Abune Gabriel and Abune Deyoskoros,MelakeSelam Abba Gebre Selassie,Abba Tewodros, Abba NahuSenai and the much-loved Memeher yenata Eshetu where present, university professors and officials of Mahibere Kidusan as Dn Berhanu Admasu, chief editor of Hamer Magazine and others were also present. During the program it was suggested to prepare the book in audio form since the story has such a magnificant narrative nature which will lift the heart and soul when heard.
The book is available in any Mahibere Kidusan stores and other private spiritual book
stores.

Muslims Reject 2007 Census Result, Call for Action

[EMJ]: Ethiopian Muslim organizations, leaders , activists , associations, thinkers and scholars all over the world rejected the 2007 census after conducting a teleconference. The conference was transmitted Live for about 7 hrs to a large audiences on palktak who had their chance to participate on the conference.

According to Negashi Blog, no time was spent on discussing of the corruptness of the census data at all. For Ethiopian muslims they lived it for along time, even they had a time were their very existence was denied. However, a detail was given on how things were developing for the latest census data, which Muslims had some hope of reversing the denial tradition, including under and above ground actors from insiders.

Muslims organization felt that they were let down by the government. That is after they had a land mark journey which they raised several muslim issues directly with the prime minster, which included the census data. A Badr member and one of the top leaders who led the journey expressed this as the “last one of a chain of our demands that we got it slapped on our face”, despite the promise. “we have been doing this for the sake of our country and the love that we have for it. We know that the country will never prosper as long as the majority who are Muslims are oppressed.”He stressed .

The conference and the discussion was far beyond pointing fingers which Muslims usually do to get a temporary relief to their pain.In fact Muslims focused on self criticisms and self evaluation. They asked their failure to have any kind of impact of what so ever on the ground. ” What would you bring if they were to claim Muslims as 2%?”, one activist asked. A hot debate and discussion followed this reality, to get deeper and touch the reality.

Many found it to be things deeper than simple numbers and far beyond the existing regime. History and experience was briefly visited including the changes the country has seen wih regime changes. ” There are variables and static or invariable parts of policies”, a thinker and a scholar explained. “Policies regarding muslims issues are among the fixed ,unchanging part of the policies”, he continued. He warned that some muslims should not be deluded by the variables, and should not expect that a solution by changing a prime minister or individuals, but within inside.

All participants have come to a conclusion that to shake the invariables and bring justice and coexistence based on mutual respect, muslims should show their existence in reality, regardless of what the paper says. There was an understanding that blame lies on muslims themselves, not on christian elites and media who organized themselves to their own objective no matter how narrow and greedy their target might be.

“Good News! Good News!” it was that amazing person once again. Everybody who is dismayed by what is going on was surprised to hear him saying this at a time muslims thought that the good news are far beyond their imagination.

“You might be surprised that I see a good news at statistical data which slaughtered millions of muslism! That apparently is not a good news, but nothing is new about this. The good news is that a record number of Ethiopian muslims are gathring and patiently discussed this single issue for a record length of time. For the first time I see muslims feeling the pain and expressing their readiness to bring a change. I am optimistic that change is coming and that is the GOOD NEWS.!!!”

Of the how to react a short ,a medium and a long run actions were proposed. They include legal, political and social activities to increase the awareness and expose how flawed the census data is, but in scientific and and organized way.

Absurd statistical gimmick in Ethiopia’s 2007 census

Absurd statistical gimmick in Ethiopia’s 2007 census and the need for accounting for the missing 3.0 million people in Amhara and Addis Ababa
When the second population and housing census was conducted in 1994 (the first was in 1984), the total population of Ethiopia was 53.5 million, putting the country the second most populous in Africa. There were no surprises or inconsistencies in the results of both censuses. Unlike its predecessors, the 2007 National Population and Housing Census was accompanied by long delays and the results contained horrific inconsistencies and unprecedented errors.

The much awaited population census result was made public a couple of weeks ago. According to the new census, the country is home to only 73.9 million people in 2007, significantly lower than the 79.1 million expected based on the 1994 census and various demographic surveys carried out between 1994 and 2007 (see World Bank, Ethiopia at a Glance). The population growth rate has been reduced from 2.6 to 2.51. What is striking about the census is that the lower overall population number or growth rate is attributed to a sharp decline mainly in two regions, namely Amhara and Addis Ababa.

According to the 2007 census, population growth rate varies markedly among the different regions: the highest annual population growth rate is observed in Gambella region (4.1 percent) followed by Benishangul-Gumuz, growing at a rate of 2.94 percent (Table 1). Oromiya and SNNP are reported to be growing at 2.90 percent per annum over the same period. The growth rate for Tigray is 2.48 percent. 2.55 percent for Somali, 2.40 percent for Dire Dawa, 2.22 percent for Afar and 2.61 percent for Harari. By contrast, the growth rate for Amhara is the lowest, only 1.70 percent. The capital city, Addis Ababa, is also reported to be growing by only 2.01 percent per annum, the second lowest growth rate. The sudden drop in the growth rate of Amhara is totally inconsistent with trends and statistical facts until the current census report. Why are the growth rates so low in Amhara and Addis Ababa? Is there any fundamental economic transformation or any disaster of biblical proportion taking place in the two regions? Similar doubts were also raised when the census report was recently presented to the Parliament but no satisfactory responses were given.

Available demographic and socioeconomic evidences demonstrate that the Amhara region is in no way different from the other regions. Table 2, for instance, portrays total fertility rates by region and it can be observed that the Amhara region has the fifth highest total fertility rate and the third highest mean number of children ever born to a woman of 40 to 49 years old. In other words, Amhara and Tigray regions have the same fertility rates (5.1). The mean number of children born is, in fact, higher in Amhara (7.0) than in Tigray (6.8). Only SNPP (7.5) and Oromiya (7.1) have a higher mean number of children ever born to a woman than Amhara. This is to be expected because women in Amhara are not better educated than their counterparts in other regions: illiterate women in Amhara region account for 69.5 percent, compared to 63.0 percent in Tigray, 66.1 percent in Oromiya and 69.6 percent in SNNP (Table 3). The Amhara region also shares similar features with other regions of the country such as Oromiya, Benishangul-Gumuz, and SNNP in terms of wealth distribution (Table 4). Not surprisingly, close to 84 percent of married women in the Amhara region did not use any contraceptive in 2005 (Table 5), a feature akin to regions like Tigray, Oromiya, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella and SNNP. It should be made clear that all the information (tables 2 to 5) is from the 2005 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) report which is based on a nationally representative data collected only two years before the new census by the Central Statistical Agency (CSA). CSA is, a government institution which also conducted all the census surveys, including the current one.

There is absolutely no justification for the 1.7 percent growth rate in the Amhara region. If we take a conservative growth rate of 2.51 percent, which is the same as the national average, then the true population of the Amhara region is 19.09 million, not 17.21 million (Table 6). Nearly two million people have ceased to exist in the Amhara region not because of any sudden earthquake or tsunami but because of absurd statistical error or unprofessional manipulation. Given that Amhara is among the poorest regions in the country, budgetary and grant allocations which exclude the two million people of the region would only worsen the poverty and deprivation.

With regard to Addis Ababa, it is true that the administrative region has the lowest fertility rate or the lowest mean number of children ever born to women. However, the population growth of the region is driven more by migration than by natural growth. According to the 1999 Labour Force Survey, the rate of net-migration in the city was 3.9 percent per annum. We believe this rate of migration has increased in recent years as evidenced by the rapid expansion of the city over the last 10 or 15 years. The recent boom in the housing construction in all corners of the city is unprecedented. If we add a minimum natural growth rate of 1.0 percent to the 3.9 percent of net-migration (which is an underestimate by all account), the annual growth rate of Addis Ababa’s population is 4.9 percent, which is more than double the growth rate given in the new census report (2.01%). Accordingly, the true population of Addis Ababa is 3.93 million, not 2.74 million as given in the new census report (Table 6). Again, the 1.2 million people missing in the new census do exist and need to be counted.

In short, Ethiopia’s total population in 2007 was not 73.8 million but rather 76.9 million. A total of 3.0 million people in Amhara and Addis Ababa have not been accounted for in the latest census. The anomalies in the report are extreme with serious political, social, economic, legal, ethical and human right implications. This blatant error is unprofessional and deeply embarrassing for the government. We trust that CSA still has statisticians and demographers capable of checking the facts and taking corrective actions without delay. We also call upon multilateral and bilateral organizations operating in Ethiopia, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Bank, the IMF, the African Development Bank, USAID, DFID, SIDA and CIDA as well as statisticians, demographers and related professionals to look at the inconsistencies and gross underestimations. Any delay in acknowledging the existence of the 3.0 million people would only mean that the error occurred by design, not by accident. This incidence, if not corrected immediately, should also cast serious doubt on all quantitative and qualitative information so far provided by the government. Improvement in per capita income requires a sound development strategy and a concerted effort to increase the numerator or the GDP, not a sudden slashing down of the denominator or the size of the population.

In our next report, we will critically look at the current census report by major religions.

Warning Signs of a Troubled Marriage

Dear Deje Selamaweyan,
Here we have another topic of different theme for a change. Take it a food-for-soul thing.

Seven Warning Signs of a Troubled Relationship

When is it time to say, "My relationship is in trouble, and we need help?" How do you know when that time is?

By Sharon Rivkin,
Updated: Dec 9, 2008

When couples wait too long to ask for help, the relationship may be beyond repair. The sooner help is sought, the better chance there is of recovering, saving and actually strengthening the relationship. This includes issues dealing with affairs or other types of betrayal.

The longer we wait, the more entrenched we get in destructive patterns and resentment and all hope for change is lost.
The longer we wait, the more entrenched we get in destructive patterns and resentment and all hope for change is lost. At a certain point we don't even want change... we just want to be done.

The seven warning signs that a relationship is in trouble are:
1. Fighting has become the rule rather than the exception to the rule.
2. You find yourself looking outside the relationship for comfort, care, and understanding.
3. You can't remember what attracted you to your partner in the first place.
4. There is little or no intimacy in your relationship -- sleeping in different rooms or different beds, lack of interest, anger, and hostility so that intimacy is out of the question.
5. Spending very little time together, friends seem to be more important than your partner.
6. Reactions to situations are disproportionate to the content of the disagreement (i.e., feeling your partner doesn't love you because she/he didn't like the meal you cooked).
7. Feeling helpless and hopeless to change anything. Feeling done with the relationship, but unclear as to where to go and what to do. Feelings of anger, resentment, pain, and desperation are predominant.

If any or all of these describe you in your relationship, your relationship is in trouble and it won't be long before something more drastic happens, such as an affair, arguments get worse and inflate with intensity, increased jealousy, silence for longer periods of time, and sometimes even physical and/or verbal abuse.
Before your relationship reaches that critical crisis point, look at the warning signs and do something before it's too late:
1. Seek psychotherapy,
2. Read books,
3. Talk to a spiritual/religious advisor,

Without help, the relationship will never get better with time; once a certain level of resentment, anger, and hostility hits, it will simply get worse and worse. Avoiding a total crisis and saving the relationship is done by knowing when you're in trouble and taking immediate action.

Ethiopia pullout opens door for Somali Islamists

By Andrew Cawthorne | December 9, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Unless U.S. ally Ethiopia is bluffing about a plan to withdraw soldiers from Somalia within weeks, it will usher in a probable power vacuum and a perilous new chapter in the Horn of Africa nation's bloody history.

The exit of Ethiopia's remaining 3,000 or so troops at the end of the year will leave the weak, Western-backed government exposed to Islamist insurgents already knocking on Mogadishu's door.
The government controls little more than its own bases in the capital and the parliamentary seat of Baidoa -- and even that with the help of Ethiopian soldiers.

The African Union has about 3,200 peacekeepers in Mogadishu, but they would be unable to resist an Islamist takeover even if it were in their mandate.

There is talk too, among regional diplomatic circles, that they would like to follow the Ethiopians out of Somalia fast.

And should the United Nations overcome its reluctance to intervene in Somalia, where a disastrous mission in the 1990s led to ignominious exit, it would take at least six months to get a peacekeeping force ready.

So exactly two years after the Ethiopians drove the Islamists out of Mogadishu, there appears little stopping their comeback in an about-turn mocking the efforts of the West to make President Abdullahi Yusuf's government work.

The Islamists' main obstacle is their own disunity.

Should the insurgents -- who already control large swathes of south and central Somalia -- take the war-shattered capital again at the New Year, they will not be the homogenous movement they were during a six-month rule in 2006.

This time, there are deep divisions, ranging from the militant al Shabaab movement, to moderate elements in the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) and Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia (ARS) who support power-sharing with the government.

"The extremist al Shabaab Islamist group is best placed to take control of Mogadishu, but this is not a foregone conclusion," said David Shinn, a U.S. expert on the Horn of Africa at George Washington University.

While al Shabaab have spearheaded attacks this year to become the face of the insurgency, they lack popular support, and do not have enough fighters to rule on their own without alliances with Islamist movements, analysts say.

Al Shabaab's hardline ways -- such as strict imposition of sharia law, banning drinking or films, and the beheading of several suspected government collaborators -- sit uncomfortably with many among Somalia's traditionally moderate Muslims.

"LET THE CARDS FALL"

"If Ethiopia goes, the main rationale for Shabaab's jihad goes, and they will be isolated. Then the ICU and the pro-peace wing of the ARS would come to the fore," one diplomat said.

"Let the cards fall. There will be a bit of fighting and revenge-taking, then they will do the usual deal-making among themselves. There is no option now but to let the Somalis work it out. We should hope that a democratic Islamic state, like Malaysia, Singapore or Pakistan emerges. Why not?"

An obvious alternative would be chaos, feuding fiefdoms, and a further deterioration of the country that tops the index of failed states prepared by the Washington-based Fund for Peace.

Somalia's breakdown has already contributed to a surge of piracy that has brought Western navies rushing to protect the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's most important shipping lanes.

Some doubt Ethiopia will pull out.

There is conjecture too, among Somalis and experts, that Washington is pressing its ally to stay in for fear of a takeover by al Shabaab and others whom the United States see as al Qaeda proxies.

But the signs from Addis Ababa are that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is serious.

He is genuinely fed up with the financial cost of his Somali mission, the lack of progress by Yusuf and other squabbling leaders, and the absence of a serious, international effort to pacify Somalia, analysts say.

"Ethiopia's decision to withdraw its troops from Somalia is final and irreversible. Ethiopia serious and is not bluffing," Foreign Ministry spokesman Wahade Belay said.

Ethiopian officials do say, however, that logistics might delay a complete exit by a few days beyond the stated year-end deadline, meaning it would be completed in early January.

A pullback is not the end of Ethiopian involvement, though. It will keep troops on the border, ready to spring back in should there be a threat to its interests.

"The security stakes for Ethiopia are far too high for it to do anything else. Ethiopia is 'pulling out' but not 'pulling away' from Somalia," said another Somalia expert, Ken Menkhaus.

During the Islamist rule of 2006, and again now in Islamist-taken areas, Somalis have a nuanced view. They welcome the order and security the Islamists bring, but chafe under the imposition of strict religious rules.

Many are bracing for yet another period of instability in the seemingly incessant rounds of violence gripping the country since 1991. Just the last two years' fighting has killed about 10,000 civilians, made more than a million homeless, and left about three million hungry.

"I am afraid when Ethiopia withdraws, Somalis will just kill themselves," said Omar Muhudin Abudar, a 24-year-old Mogadishu student, expressing the general fear of the future.
