Happy Ethiopian New Year

The Ethiopian New Year, መሰከረም አንድ, which falls on 11Th September, is closely linked to the end of the rainy season. On the eve of the new year people light a fire in front of of their doorways and children run around with torches, which symbolise the light that overcomes darkness and, a sign of purity, welcome in the holiday.

The celebration has another name called እንቁጣጣሽ (Enkutatash). The name arose from the meeting of King Solomon and Queen of Sheba, our Ethiopian queen. According to the Ethiopian tradition, King Solomon presented a jewel to queen Makeda with the words ‹‹እንቁ ለጣትሽ›› (A JEWEL TO YOUR FINGER).
